🆕 New features in WebShop

Making WebShop more accessible

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is a European Directive that applies to many products and services1. It aims to make these products and services more accessible to persons with disabilities. Products and services that must be compliant with EAA include B2C (Business to Consumer) and e-commerce websites. Currently, it does not apply to B2B (Business-to-Business) e-commerce sites.

It came into effect on 28 June 2025.

We have focused our efforts on making WebShop more accessible for persons with disabilities (whether that disability is visual, auditory, physical, cognitive, or neurological) by making those improvements in line with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. Our changes mean that WebShop can be used with assistive technology.

In our May 2025 release notes, we shared information about these changes. The following improvements have now been released and apply to current WebShop implementations:

  • Better keyboard navigation, including fixing tab order and hover interactions on popups and menus.

Each page in WebShop starts in the top-left field of the header, and logically moves through the fields from left to right. When you select Enter to open a particular menu, either a sub-menu opens or a new screen is displayed. When a sub-menu opens, the pointer moves to the first element of the sub-menu. Once the sub-menu has been traversed, the pointer moves to the following field in the main menu. When a new screen opens, the pointer returns to the top-left field of the new screen.

  • Interactive elements are perceivable to both humans and assistive technologies.

Assistive technologies like screen readers can logically read through menus and sub-menus.

  • Improving alt-text and aria labelling in our standard WebShop template.

These changes improve accessibility in line with WCAG Level 2.1 AA and support WebShop accessibility.

Remember that Products and services that must comply with the EAA include B2C (Business to Consumer) and e-commerce websites. Currently, it does not apply to B2B (Business-to-Business) e-commerce sites. You must comply with this directive if your WebShop implementation has any B2C capabilities. Depending on your WebShop implementation, you may need to comply with the EAA.

We are here to support your compliance with this directive and will continue to make accessibility improvements in the future.

Introducing Templates Editor

The Templates Editor is integrated with the Management Interface. It is a code-based design tool that can extend the look and feel of some aspects of your WebShop. The Template Editor uses Twig. Twig is an open source template engine1, which we call our templating language. Twig consists of a standard syntax that uses expressions, variables, and tags to control the content and logic of each template. Read Introduction to Twig - the fast, fast and secure template engine for PHP (external site) for more information about how to use Twig.

We have exposed objects and variables that you can use to modify the Account Dashboard and the Gated Login landing page (if enabled).

Now, you can

  • Add messages, links to customer promotions, and/or change the order of elements contained in the body of the Account Dashboard

  • Add messages, input fields, and/or change the order of elements in the Gated Login landing page

by using the exposed code snippets that have been shared with you in the Templates Editor.
